“Some people choose to live their dreams with their eyes closed. I choose to live my dreams with them open.” The maxim, compliments of a friend, is something Jason “J-One” Marshall lives by daily. This might explain why the Little Rock, Arkansas native is a highly sought-after gem among the up and coming music producers in the South.
J-One may not quite be a household name – yet. But that’s definitely not for lack of effort nor talent. In terms of today’s music-industry standards, his rise in popularity is impressive. In the past six years, the innovative producer/songwriter has worked with a long list of Hip Hop, R&B, and Neo-Soul artists across the nation proving he can hang with the heavy-hitters in the recording industry.
Seeking to experiment in the administrative side of the music industry, J-One started his very own record label – J-One Music LLC in 2005. His production talents have blessed David Lawrence, one of Arkansas’ most accomplished R&B performers, as well as rap duo “Dre and Jontai,” who received prominent exposure on a recent episode of MTV’s “My Super Sweet Sixteen.” Other artists include 607, Lil Rok Playaz, Sincere, and a plethora of other hot entertainers in the A-state. The substance contained in their music is visceral and thought provoking. So much so, that his mixes and beats drew the attention of Hip Hop artists from as far away as Ireland and other parts of the United Kingdom.
“Do not put a period where God has placed a comma in your life,” good friend Langston Carr once said to him after an unfortunate situation. Soon after, J-One choose that this was his time to shine and he made the best with his time. Within 72 hours the producer, singer, & songwriter decided to release his very own solo project “Electronic Soul” (EP), prepared for eager ears to listen.
The now Producer/Singer/Songwriter with virtually “RAW” talent is being compared to the likes of Mario, Usher, Lloyd and even rapper Twista once performing as a lyrist. Already being compared to platinum selling artist is even more of a appealing to him because it simply states there is room for growth – and with that, the sky is the limit. “J-One is the type of person who epitomizes the term over-achieving multitasker,” his good friend Randolph “Apollo” Thompson said. “In his eye’s, there is nothing broke that he can’t fix.”
Taken on as a hobby, J-One’s appetite for mixing music began in a simple way. It was the end of a school day and his parents picked him up in their car. The radio was tuned in on the local rhythm and blues station when Timbaland’s “Up Jump the Boogie” blared from his parents’ car radio. The song was meticulously precise. Every sound clipped and positioned just so. The sultry miasma of lazily twining rhythms drew J-One in like a magnetic force. The Timbaland classic, summoned by its intoxicating sound, lead to J-One testing out his own techniques and rules-changing skills working from his home recording studio, with an MPC 2000, Motif 6, and a creative mind at hand. His other influences also include The Neptunes and Kanye West, just to name a few.
The question is no longer if J-One will be successful in this industry. It’s simply a question of when. Prior to recording a single note, he collects as much material available to the artist or group, then personally studies each track so that during the recording process he can focus on their strengths. He treats himself in the same manner as a solo artist.
Currently, J-One is promoting his solo EP, “Electronic Soul” (available for purchase online at www.j-onemusic.com) while continuing to freelance additional artists throughout the industry. His upcoming projects include the completion of his 6 song EP, Electronic Soul, production on David Lawrence’s upcoming album, as well as several compilation albums.
J-One is eager to continue stamping his indelible imprint on the music scene across the South and worldwide. When asked why he calls himself “J-One” here’s what the R&B, Hip-Hop, & Neo-Soul producer had to say:
“When a person hears the phrase “That’s A-1,” they instantly think quality. So, since I like to be associated with a quality product, I just changed the ‘A’ to a ‘J,’ given that my name is Jason……. See you at the top!”
